Elizabeth is the heroine of the book; she is naturally clever, witty and charismatic. She has the same satirical humour as her father but hers is somewhat less derivative, she is also the favourite of her father and as we respect his judgement we are open to liking her. In general she seems to have good insight into people, and her opinion is valued - especially by Jane; her only area of misjudgement is Darcy and Wickham. Elizabeth is self-assured, and wants to be an individual – she doesn't regulate her behaviour to please others but judges things for herself and always stands her ground; raising her status is no concern of hers and at the start of the novel is looking for romance instead, shown in her refusal of Mr Collins.
             Elizabeth shows strong prejudices in the first half of the novel, wherever Darcy and Wickham are concerned. She judges Wickham by appearances, she is struck by his 'fine countenance,' 'a good figure,' and 'happy readiness of conversation.' She thinks him 'completely charming.' Elizabeth quickly judges Darcy after his rebuff at the Meryton Ball and she is too proud to consider being partial to him, this is shown in the way Elizabeth uses "great spirit" to retell the story "among her friends". Elizabeth uses humour as a defence mechanism. She later admits that she was 'Pleased with the preference of (wickham), and offended by the neglect of (Darcy).' Her feelings for the two men are always connected, she uses her like for Wickham to fuel her dislike for Darcy: 'Patience with Darcy, was injury to Wickham'. Elizabeth forces her herself to dislike Darcy: 'a man . . . whom was is determined to hate!' Her opinions of Darcy are based on a surface level, and she is easily influenced and blinded: of Wickham she claims: 'there was truth in his looks.'
