Speeding is Bad

             In American society today, there are certain laws designed to protect all citizens. One such law is the speed limit law. Despite the many variations of the law found throughout the country, it is essentially the same everywhere. In residential areas the speed limit is somewhere around 25-35 MPH, on city streets it is usually 45-55 MPH, on major highways it is around 55-65 MPH, and on interstates it is 65-70 MPH.
             Speed limit laws are designed to protect each driver and passenger on the roads and highways of the United States. Therefore, if one person breaks this law it endangers not only him or herself, but the people in the vicinity of the violator. Speeding is dangerous to everyone.
             There are numerous statistics available to backup my former statement, but I have chosen those accumulated by the National Association on Vehicular Statistics and Analysis. In 2000, over 593,000 motorists received minor injuries from speeding-related car crashes, 71,000 received moderate injuries, and 39,000 received serious to critical injuries. These statistics prove that speeding enhances the probability of wreck with injuries.
             Speeding reduces a driver's ability to steer safely around curves or objects in the roadway, extends the distance necessary to stop a vehicle, and increases the distance a vehicle travels while the driver reacts to a dangerous situation. With another variable added into the equation, the driver's reactions become at least 10 times slower. This variable is alcohol.
             Alcohol and speeding seem to go hand in hand. In 2000, 23% of speeding drivers involved in fatal crashed were under the influence of alcohol. In contrast, only 10% of non-speeding motorists involved in a fatal crash were intoxicated. This shows that the use of alcohol greatly affects a driver's ability to make safe, healthy decisions.
