Disabilities and sports

             With more and more facilities and activities becoming accessible to people with disabilities, so to have they become more visible, at the same time the idea of exercise as both a preventative measure and a treatment for secondary conditions has increased within the health care community. It is still evident however that a perception remains that exercise is a health risk to those with disabilities. This is a potential hindrance to both the disabled and to those whose expertise in the field can help those with disabilities, It is a fact that people with disabilities are less likely to engage in regular moderate physical activity than people without disabilities, yet they have similar needs to promote their health and prevent unnecessary disease (Surgeon General), hence the benefits of physical exercise on the disabled individual are as follows.
             Exercise and positive emotional benefits.
             Researchers at the University of Florida have found a direct correlation between those who exercise and experience positive emotional benefits and those who do not exercise and subsequently experience normal to negative moods. The researchers found that, on any given day, regardless of the event the participants experienced an increase in positive moods, especially on a day that they exercised more. Peter Giacobbi, an assistant professor of sport and exercise psychology at the College of Health and human Performance said "It's very widely established that exercise is beneficial for your physical health, but the evidence here suggests it can also lead to more positive mood states, which is correlated with mental health and life satisfaction," he went on to say. "So I think the benefits of exercise should be extended into the mental-health arena a little bit more feverishly.
