Drugs in Disguise

             In the world today, drugs are one of the biggest problems in society. Every time the local news is broadcasted on television, someone is involved in either selling or taking drugs. The average person does not think of himself as an addict, but have you ever considered yourself a drug addict? The question is shocking, but you might be surprised with the answer. Do you enjoy a cup of coffee in the morning, a cigarette after a meal, or a cold beer after a hard day of work? If so, you are guilty of taking drugs. Caffeine, nicotine, and alcohol are three substances that are not always considered to be drugs.
             The first drug that seems to wear a very deceiving mask is caffeine. Caffeine is in a category of drugs known as stimulants. Other drugs in this category include cocaine and several different amphetamines. Although caffeine is not as powerful as its relatives, the same effects still apply. The central nervous system is effected through increases in heart rate and breathing rate. When caffeine is ingested in high levels, the body senses a feeling of excitement. Caffeine is found in many drinks such as soda, coffee, and tea. The daily usage of these products will result in a form of addiction.
             Another drug that is often overlooked is nicotine. This drug is also in the category of stimulants. The effects of nicotine, however, are much greater. The veins within the body become restricted, and the blood that circulates through them becomes thinner. Over time, this bodily change can result in heart attacks, strokes, cancers, or even death. Nicotine is found in the tobacco plant. Tobacco is used to make products such as cigarettes, cigars, and chewing tobacco. All of these products are forms of recreation; however, they have harmful side effects.
