To die by fate or to die by carelessness. In the story "To Build A Fire" by Jack London, the main character died because of his imprudent actions and not fate. He could have changed the outcome of the story by thinking about things before actually doing them, and listing to his acquired wisdom from the old man. The old man told him some valuable information and he over looked the information and he mocked the old man. That is why the character in the story died because of his negligence.
The main character should have built the fire away from the snow-covered tree. If he had he could have lived. He should have taken his time and thought and looked around before he did anything then he would have saw the snow-covered tree and would have built the fire away from it. Then the out come of the story would have been different.
If the main character would have changed his attitude to the dog and treated him well he might have helped a little bit. "The dog knew what cold was, his ancestors knew and he knew, it was instinct". If he would have been nicer to the dog instead of trying to be an enemy to him he might have lived. He was going against too many enemies, nature, time, and some one who should be a companion. If the dog wanted to he could have led the whole time and the dog would have fell through the ice and the man would have knew where not to go. "It hung back until the man shoved it forward." He should have made the dog walk in front and found the right path.
You should always go to places prepared. You would not go to work with no pants on or go to a base ball game with out your glove or bat so why would any one go out in subzero weather with no change of clothes or more then one pair of gloves.
