Lathe of Heaven

             Haber¡¯s abuse of Orr¡¯s power creates an unbalanced society that falls into chaos. His quest for a Utopia eventually fails because a society where obstacles and challenges exist for some and not others can¡¯t sustain itself. In the novel, The Lathe of Heaven, Haber uses a machine, The Augmentor, to read Orr¡¯s ultimately ¡°effective dreams¡± which he uses to own his desire to hold the power control the future. His power doesn¡¯t create a Utopia for everyone because the rest of the people don¡¯t have his advantage. Instead, his ability to read the future turns him into a dictator. Like many dictators around the world, Haber is unable to satisfy his own desires since he lacks the power or knowledge required to fulfill the needs of the masses consequently there are many unintended problems.
             George Orr is horrified by his effective dreams because they sometimes come true. The world he wakes up to has changed into the world that he dreamed, which is often radical and violent. George Orr struggles with the dreams that keep turning into reality. He starts using illegal drugs to prevent himself from having the effective dreams. When he nearly overdoses, he is saved by an elevator guard and a medic. He is accused of drug abuse and undergoes Voluntary Therapeutic Treatment. During the therapeutic treatment sessions, Orr meets Dr. Haber, a psychiatrist. Dr. Haber realizes that his dreams are actually effective and starts using his machine, The Augmentor to read levels of Orr¡¯s dreams which he then makes effective use of. These actions show Haber¡¯s desire to have power in what the future holds, not his interest in treating Orr, ¡°He¡¯s not¡not an evil man. He means well.
