Hills like white elephants

             In Hills Like White Elephants the point of view is third person objective. There is no sense of feelings or thoughts from any of the characters. Although, there is evidence of feelings in the story by what the characters say. I believe that the story would have had a different plot if you we knew what the characters were thinking.
             Hemmingway uses a significant symbol, the white elephant. It is said that white elephant sales are when you have junk that you do not want anymore. In this case the man"'"s junk is the woman"'"s treasure. The white elephant is very rare which compares with her because her child is also very rare to her. Another symbol in Hills Like White Elephants is the train. That symbolizes the things in their life coming and going. It is very significant that this is a major change in their life.
             The man"'"s persuasion makes her very uncomfortable. I believe she starts drinking because she is so uncomfortable. She might have also thought that she could perform her own abortion by drinking. She is thought to be part of the upper class because she was able to sit around all day and drink. Yet, the man is seen to be very manipulative because he says, '"'It is your choice'"', but still tries to convince her by saying, '"'You know it's simple, you know everything will be ok.'"'
             The tone in Hills Like White Elephants is intense because the man and woman are so uncomfortable with each other. He talks about nothing but abortion, which in turn she is tired of thinking about it. She is so fed up that that is when she makes up her mind. He also symbolizes the devil because he gets into her mind and pretty much makes her decision for her. He tells her '"'It is okay, all they will do is insert air and everything will be just fine.'"'
             The theme is based upon what is in your heart. She wants to do what she thinks id right, which is keeping the baby. He convinces her that life would be too complicated and unsteady if she
