In the Jewish religion, it is understood that the world rests on three pillars. Many agree the most important of the three is Gemilut Chasidim, or acts of kindness (feeding the poor, visiting the sick, helping the needy and countless other mitzvot). Followers of the Jewish faith feel there is an important obligation to perform acts of charity and righteousness that make the world whole. Tikkun olam (repairing the world) and tzedakah (righteous giving) are two very important core values in Judaism. These and other principles inspire much social service in the Jewish community. Much of said social service benefits from the Jewish Social Service Agency, which reflects the highly valued philanthropy in the Jewish community. This association and others (such as the Jewish Coalition for Service, Jewish United Fund TOV, Jewish Fund for Justice, etc), provide many opportunities for people of any age to help around the world. Many of these associations are charity funds, which provide the needed resources to educate, provide healthcare and hospices, and seek justice for those of all faiths and backgrounds less fortunate in Israel, United States, and other countries.
             In Chicago, a common philanthropy act for any volunteer over 12 is the JUF "Uptown Café". Kosher meals are provided for the poor- regardless of religious beliefs or practices. Food is served in restaurant style and patrons are treated with the dignity and respect they deserve. Not only is a free meal provided four times a week, the staff at the Uptown Café sit and eat with the guests, providing a much needed social outlet for many. Volunteers also try their best to provide links to the Jewish community of other social services.
             Any kind act of charity or service is looked highly upon in Judaism. Helping others is a great mitzvah, and most active Jews will try their best to do whatever social service they can provide.
