The Crucible

             The Crucible- John Proctor, Code Hero
             In the play The Crucible, written by Arthur Miller, we have a main character of the play, John Proctor. John Proctor is the average Puritan farmer that happens to live in Salem, Massachusetts during the Salem Witch Trials. At this time many people are being accused of witchcraft, even the upright citizens that good Christians. John Proctor eventually is jailed and hung for witchcraft. In this play John Proctor shows an ideal example for Hemmingway's Code Hero. In the play he shows a great amount of pride, endurance, and will to face the many problems he faces that eventually lead to his downfall.
             In the play John goes to the court to help release his wife from jail; considering that she has been accused of witchcraft. He brings Mary Warren as proof that the girls have been lying to the judges to save themselves from being accused. Mary Warren tries to tell the truth until Abigail enters the courtroom. Mary Warren eventually turn on her own master and says that John Proctor forced her to make a pact with Lucifer and he too was a witch. The court is shocked and John Proctor cannot even say a word. John tries his best to prove his point that the girls are lying, but Abigail and the rest of the girls are too persuasive and the judge sides with them. John is thrown in jail for a crime he has not committed just because he is a threat to the girls' plans. John is begged to confess to witchcraft, so that he can live and see the birth of his fourth child. John confesses, but the judge wants him to sign documents. John refuses to sign the papers and he is later hung because he refused to sign court documents.
             When John Proctor is testifying in the court he admits to lechery and fornication to help prove his self to the court that he is an honest man. John accepts his sins that he has committed and when Elizabeth lies to protect John's name she puts him in greater trou
