             The function of Custody is to guard the correctional client. As stated before, this is done by classifying them and then housing them accordingly. In order to achieve this successfully, the prison design, both inside and outside, needs to be looked at.
             Today, we use the New Generation System. This 'combines the principles of continual surveillance with personal interaction.' Correctional clients are free to move around their assigned unit under direct the supervision of the officer on duty. The floors are carpeted, there are windows, and 'there are no communal walls or bars.' There are individual rooms with doors; not unlike what you may find in a college dorm.
             The outside design depends on whether the security level is classified as a minimum, medium, maximum or super-maximum facility.
