King came out and told the people that he refused to respond violently to them. During the beginning of the boycott, he received a threatening telephone call. He later said, "I could hear an inner voice saying to me, Martin Luther, stand up for righteousness. Stand up for justice. Stand up for the truth. And lo I will be with you, even until the end of the world." He was later appointed president of the Montgomery Improvement Association. In November of 1956, the Supreme Court ruled in favor of ending segregated buses.
