The Prince

When Machiavelli wrote the prince he was depicting two types of rulers, those who were loved and those who were feared. He gives tips and helpful hints on how to gain a principality and keep it safe and as a part of your kingdom. He says that a prince could live in the principality and "win the affections" or "inspire them with fear". Machiavelli lists dos and don'ts in the art of taking over an area by force, .0inheritance, or purchasing it. In this essay I will list my feelings and reactions to the remarks he made on the ways of the leaders of his time and how I feel about his theories.
I personally feel that a leader should hold a certain amount of love and fear in the hearts of his people. If he is to caring and his people love him to no end then they would be acting like a herd of sheep following the country boy Sheppard. But on the other hand a leader who is feared too much will leave his people no choice but to leave or revolt. Machiavelli's ideas on having a prince look not only to the problems now but also at the problems of the future are extremely intelligent. Seeing as how during the renaissance most men and women were only thinking of how they could live through the next week without getting a plague or having their power put in scrutiny. This is why most leaders of his time were seen as cruel degenerates. In our words they were probably just living for the moment.
I do however agree with Machiavelli on his perceptions and theories of the leaderships of an earlier time. His advice could have helped many leaders keep themselves from being driven out of their own palaces during the Middle Ages. But during the Renaissance there was too much of a need for any form of central government to make any one person want to speak out against a leader. However, in the Middle Ages there was no central government to stop any wealthy landowners from turning estates into territories
