             'Twelfth Night' is an elusive play. It is a combination of both comedy and melancholy but cannot be classed as just one or the other. There are parts such as the letter to Malvolio, which are amusing but then lead to the reader feeling pity for him when he is cruelly treated. Feste is an elusive character and can't be classed as either comic or melancholic. The story involving Sebastian and Antonio are an example of something good happening to one and bringing sadness to the other which in this story involves, again, both comedy and melancholy.
             One of the most amusing parts of the play, 'Twelfth Night' is that of Viola dressing as a man, Cesario. Believing her brother is dead, Viola hears of a "noble duke" which she takes great interest in. However to get near him with any respect she believes she must dress as a man. She asks the captain to help her "Conceal me what I am" so that she can pass as a male. This is very amusing for those watching the play although there is sadness as Viola believes her brother is drowned. Now as Cesario, Viola succeeds in becoming a servant for the 'noble' Count Orsino. Cesario becomes the favourite servant for Orsino and is sent on his most important mission, the get love of Olivia who is in mourning after her brother's death. This however leads to another amusing part of the play. When seeing Olivia for Orsino, Cesario manages to make Olivia fall in love with his "youth's perfections" even though Olivia is supposedly in mourning. She tells Malvolio to "run after that same peevish messenger" as she has fallen for him not knowing anything about him other than his looks. This is amusing for the reader, as they are shown how Olivia is not really taking her mourning very seriously.
