Language is a very important aspect to being able to live and function in the world today. To be able to function and communicate with most people within a language, something besides just the written language is very important and this is slang or informal language and dialogue. The first thing that may come to mind when you think of slang may be incorrect grammar. Although this may be true you would be surprised on how important informal language actually is in the world of communication and how it has changed the English language.
One example of this could be how slang or informal language is a very important aspect of being successful in college. At first this may seem ridiculous since college is so full of formal language and what formal language is. College may be about teaching in a formal way but without informal language how could a teacher explain things or words that we don't understand. Informal language is what our education is based on in a way. We are taught from birth how to speak informally since this is the language we use with out family and friends most of the time, so we base the informal language as a translator for the formal language. Our minds are made to think informally or on a lower level most of the time so this is what our minds understand until we are further educated to understand formal language.
Not only is the use of informal language important in the classroom but also outside the classroom. The language used outside the classroom or socially is something much less formal than that used in the classroom but also very important. There are many different types of informal language used when it comes to social languages. I think the type of language used in a social environment can be what divides social groups to some extent.
