When I first came to America, I was so excited that I had a chance to live in a great country where everyone has freedom and equal rights. However, right now I have doubt in my mind that I am truly living in a perfect country. I heard many times that American citizens talked about discrimination. I saw a lot of actions that they tried to stop, and I admired them. However, discrimination still exists in this country. Gay marriage is one of the examples. Somehow, I don't understand why some people oppose same-sex marriage. In my opinion, we should not oppose gay marriage because it is sex discrimination. It violates the law to have equal rights. Gay marriage is not immoral as many people think, and it also does not threaten the institution of marriage.
             Traditional marriage by definition is between a man and a woman because all of us have always seen this kind of marriage, and we automatically accept it as an obvious standard in our society. I think that it is very wrong because there is a problem in this kind of acceptance. When most people in society accept and follow one rule or one definition without questioning, it does not mean that the rule has to be right. For example, history shows that in the past centuries, people legally accepted that marriage was a "contract" in which wives were the property of their husband, and now we know that is wrong (Sullivan 10). Or thirty years ago, a marriage between a man and a woman in different races was prohibited, and now our society accepts it because we all realize that it is race discrimination. In a way, gay marriage prohibition might be just the same mistake (Sullivan 10). Some people said that every human being has his or her own rights. Gay and lesbian people are also human beings, so they deserve to have a right to marry as much as heterosexual people do.
