Civilization grew out of a number of developments. The first was agriculture, which made it possible for humans to settle in permanent communities, inspired other technologies (like pottery to make storage containers), and made it possible for some people to cultivate specialized skills. Over time, villages turned into cities with extensive trading networks based on items cast in bronze.
             When societies accumulated greater wealth, they became increasingly interested in keeping track of it. This led to the invention of written language, which had uses that went far beyond simple enumeration. Writing made it possible to codify laws and to record stories, myths, and actual events. As different people mastered the intellectual abstraction of writing, some adhered to less literal religions as well. From at least the Neolithic era, humans had worshipped nature. By the time the first civilizations emerged, they had created gods and goddesses to represent nature, and constructed rituals of offerings and sacrifice to please their deities. But some cultures redefined the nature of the divine, envisioning a single god who demanded adherence to a code of ethics, behavior, and faith.
             The relationship between the landlord and peasants were good because they have many interactions together. A landlord had the obligation to provide justice and protection to his peasants in return for their labor and tradition payments. For example, peasants might have had a traditional right to succeed his father to the patch of land the family worked, but he would have to pay to landlord for the privilege. Similarly, the lord's permission needed to be sought (and in many cases bought) before a peasant could marry. Many peasants owed their lords a certain number of days' labor every year.
