Theme's in The Red Badge of Courage

             T.V. advertisements mislead people to think of war as something romantic. Children today make games out of a serious issue such as war. In Stephen Crane's The Red Badge Of Courage Henery Fleming also has romantic ideas about war. It isn't until he is actually at battle that he sees the reality of war. War is still being perceived as romantic in today's society.
             Television ad's make wars seem very glamorous. Commercials show the romantic image of war. It shows' a nice looking male of female who is in a clean crisp uniform and is saying "be all you can be." The reality of this advertisement is that they do not show the realism of war and what being a member of one of the forces is exposed to and experiences. Rather, they put forth a different image. They make a war look clean and act very nonchalant in the advertisement. You don't' see the dirt and grime of what a real war is like. If we were shown that side of war, it would make it seem a lot less romantic. They say the phrase "Be all that you can be" as if you have not lived up to your full potential until you have enlisted in war. War is the farthest thing from romantic.
             Children play and act out wars everyday along with watching movies and television shows that involve a battle or some kind of notation that a war is romantic. Children perceive war as something fun, but there is nothing fun about it. Children play war without any repercussions and in war there will always be repercussions to your actions. They don't see the dark side of death but rather feel special and important when they eliminate their opponent Children are glued to the T.V. to watch some of their favorite shows where the entire show revolves around something violent. We need to teach children the seriousness or war and make it a point to educate them on violence so they don't believe war is romantic.
