People have different ways to think, act, even walk. If one begins to know a person, a pattern in train of thought begins to emerge. A Behavioral Scientist studies certain traits and behavioral patterns in a people. Law enforcement uses this as a tactic to stop dangerous predators such as a serial killer. Deep within the criminal mind and psyche, there is physiological reasoning behind the actions the serial killer is compelled to commit. A criminal will leave a pattern or signature behind which helps a crime scene investigator to analyze for information regarding the crime. The way a person leaves a crime scene represents that he or she is.
Serial Killers can be categorized into four major groups: Visionary, Mission-Oriented, Hedonistic, or Power Control-Oriented. The visionary killer almost always suffers from a form of psychoses; they kill at the command of voices. A killer that believes they have a justified reason for their act and convinces himself that he has a mission to rid society of a certain type of person; for example children, prostitutes, or a certain race. These killers fit into the category of Mission-Oriented. Hedonistic killers gain pleasure from raping or having sexual intercourse with a corpse, drinking blood, and other horrific acts. Most cannibals fall under this category. A hedonistic killer also does not kill for power, but for the events following the murder. Power killers are the most common category; these people will hunt and torture their victims, also gain pleasure from the actions towards their victim. The power killer's most rewarding act of the process is the actual murder.
Another category is organized killing and unorganized killing. Organized killing is the planned murder of a person. This person will prepare a site for the kill, clean the area of the murder, then dispose of the body; and then try to cover their tracks.
