Inuit tribes have many varying traditions relating to their marriage. The girls marry so young, that a girl will often continue to play with the other children right up to the time of her first pregnancy. A boy, on the other hand has to hunt well for many seasons before he has accumulated enough property to establish a home, so the husbands of the twelve year old brides are frequently grown men, two or three times as old as their wives (Fruchens, Peter 121). In certain tribes, a "father dresses his daughters as paupers regardless of his personal wealth". This is not meant as an insult to the daughters, but simply as part of village tradition. There, the general attitude is that it is a husband's responsibility to provide for his bride and the father need not supply bountifully for his daughter's needs lest she be unimpressed by the provisions of her marriage. In these villages, when a man marries a woman, he will struggle to make her as comfortable and happy as possible, provide her in abundance with clothes of "finest caribou skin" and giving her the very best meat available in his house. In other villages there are different traditions. In some areas, fathers dress their daughters in "beautiful beadwork and fine skin clothing" so they can charm a fine young hunter for a husband (The Inuit family:A study of its history, beliefs and images).
             An Eskimo wedding does not always mean that the young couple will establish a household of their own or that they are able to support themselves. What they do is join the household of either the boy's or the girl's parents. They do this because the young bride still has to learn the more difficult domestic chores, like how to cut out the various skin parts for clothing and how to sew them together.
