Jerusalem has been, for many centuries, a focal point for conflict. This is because it is considered "Holy Land" by three different religions. The Jews, Christians, and Muslims all believe that this land was given to them by God. Because all three believe this, they have been fighting with each other for centuries.
First came the Jews. They believe that this land was given to them by God, although this trait makes them no different than the other two religions. During this time, the Jews went through much hardship. The Egyptians, Assyrians, and Greeks are a few of the civilizations they fought with and that conquered them. Antiochus IV actually forbade the reading of the torah and circumcision.
Second came the Christians. This happened when emperor Constantine converted to Christianity and made it the official religion on the Empire. The Christians also believed that to them this land was God given. This caused many monasteries and holy sites to be built. It was mainly peaceful until the Turks began to persecute Christians and destroy churches. The Turks captured the city and closed all Christian sites.
Lastly came the Muslims. The armies of Islam captured Jerusalem because they too, though the Holy Land was given to them. Then the Pope initiated the Crusades and tried to get the city back from the Muslims.
Now, the land is divided into quarters: the Jewish Quarter, the Armenian Quarter, the Muslim quarter, and the Christian quarter. In fact, the Church of the Holy Sepulcher is occupied by six different denominations. Each denomination is too suspicious of each other to get close, though. Still, all three religions fight over whose land Jerusalem really belongs too, and they probably will until God Himself intervenes.
