When having children you have to think not only of their needs today but their needs tomorrow. These needs of tomorrow include higher education. The problem with this need is that it is very expensive. In the year 2017 an education will cost $37,529 based on 5% inflation. To borrow and repay a loan in the same year based on the same inflation and a ten-year loan at 8% the cost will be $54,639.
Usually with student loans the child ends up paying the loan and interest. Since I want my children to start their lives easier than mine, loans are not the answer. There is a government program that is the answer.
This government program is called TAP (Tuition Account Program). This program offers you a chance to buy an education at today's rates for tomorrow. The program is free to start if the child is less than six months old. If at any point you do not want to be enrolled anymore the money in full is paid to you, as well as, interest. The account builds at your discretion. You can deposit five dollars or more at any time.
Join the program, and pre-pay in full ($14,472), the tuition is ready to be used when child attends college. If the amount is paid over a ten-year period, the cost of tuition is $18,203. Either of these choices is a very large money saver and feasible. With the ten-year plan, the parent would only have to put in $1,820 a year. This is so much less than the child would have to pay on the school loans for ten years.
This plan may not be for everyone, but it seems very easy and affordable. However, the cost of books and room are not included in this cost only tuition. To this I have devised another plan.
Upon birth each child will be given a large jug and this will collect change and small amounts of money for childhood years. When there is a profound amount it will be either invested at very low risk or put into savings. This will be enough for room and books for four years.
