Boy or Girl?

             For centuries people have desired to be able to choose their baby's gender for various reasons. Now they can with a revolutionary fertilization technique known as preimplantation genetic diagnosis, PGD. For the small price of $18,480 plus travel expenses, anyone can now be guaranteed with almost one-hundred percent certainty which sex their newborn will be. This choice offers some ethical and moral dilemmas. Some say this practice is playing God and very inhumane. While others argue that we have been making so-called test tube babies for years and this is just another form of the same. Ethical issues aside, there are a few very good arguments in favor of this new technology. One family decided to use the new procreation method to help ensure their second child would not be born with a genetic disease which terrorizes their older child. In this light, it is easy to say that many would believe PGD can be morally acceptable if it spares a child a lifetime of torment. Currently, this process is legal in the United States, but not in other countries around the world, such as the United Kingdom. In areas of Asia where the birth of a baby boy is seen as a blessing and a baby girl isn't, the ability to choose your child's gender may entirely throw off the balance of males and females, which may turn out to be catastrophic.
             Personally, I have no strong opinion of this topic at this time. Both sides of the argument have strong evidence and viewpoints. Although, I do believe that a family should not be allowed to develop their child out of a petri dish simply for their own desire for a definite sex type. It seems obvious to me that if the PGD technique was going to give a child a chance to live a life absent of genetic illness or physical abnormalities, then there would be nothing morally wrong with the method.
