The three outsiders

             Physical appearance can become a major factor in life. MOST people obsess the feeling of having a nice image, which in turn, makes them hate the feeling of having a bad image, or as most people like to call it, "ugly". People with a bad appearance are usually isolated from society, they are judged only from the outside look of them selves and are mostly never judged from the inside. This type of action usually makes society treat these kind of people in a different way. However, there are different degrees of how society would treat these kind of people. Maria, the hunchback, and the creature in Frankenstein are characters which symbolize these kind of people. These characters were able to give examples of how society can be so cruel to those that do not look normal to them. They also show the different actions they do after taking in the cruelty..............In the story Clay, the constant repeat of Maria's tiny body and long nose gives her the appearance of a witch. Out of the three outsiders, Maria can be considered to have the least amount of cruelty taken by society. In the story, there is a hint of acceptance shown towards Maria. This acceptance however, is shown through the pity of the people. Because Maria is different, people feel sorry for her, and this pity often turns into the acceptance for Maria. This pity also turns Maria into a peacemaker, a great example of this was when the two ladies stopped fighting after Maria told them to, her appearance caused the two ladies to stop fighting. The pity for Maria is what separates her from the other two outsiders. No pity is shown for the hunchback or for the creature in Frankenstein, therefore, they do not get accepted in society. Although Maria gets acceptance from society, mockery still plays a huge part in her life. People tend to ignore and make fun of her due to her appearance.
