Human?

The definition of human is a difficult one to compose. Every time humanity thinks it has figured out exactly how we are different than the rest of life on Earth, we figure out that other animals share the exact same attributes. At one point in time we thought that we were the only species to produce and use tools. We soon found monkeys and apes using tools in the wild. We once thought humans were the only species capable of language. We now know dolphins, whales, and many primates have language systems. At first we believed ourselves to be the only species to be capable of emotion. It is now common knowledge that even our household pets have the mental capacity for emotion. Almost all world religions tell us that we are more special than other animals on creation because that is how the creator chose for it to be.
The point is, it is difficult to determine how and why we are different, we just assume that we are. The New Webster's Dictionary defines human as "belonging to, or having the qualities of, man or mankind."
In R.U.R., the original intent of Old Rossum is to basically dethrone God by demonstrating that man has the ability to create man and therefore does not need a God. At first, Old Rossum wanted to create beings identical to humans. Later scientists would eliminate certain unnecessary parts to simplify the manufacturing process. Thus, they had created something with some, but not all, qualities of man. Domin states, "Robots are not people. They are mechanically more perfect than we are, they have an astounding intellectual capacity, but they have no soul." According to Domin, the soul is what makes humans different than the robots. As Dr. Gall begins changing the robots to give them a soul, they become more like humans.
Most people believe that being human is being the ruler of the land and everything in the land was created for us to rule. Religious institutions give strength to this belief. Astrid Lindgre
