Nelson Mandela is a very popular figure in South Africa, let alone the world. He has done many things in that country to try and make it more united and peaceful. The purpose of the primary resource paper is to use sources directly from him and also for you to understand what he did to his country to make a better place.
             Mandela was born on July 18th, 1918 in Eastern Cape of South Africa. Born into the community of Thembu, he eventually assumed the role of "Paramount Chief's word, to be groomed to assume high office (anc, 2)". The first day of school that he attended, he was given the name "Nelson" by his teacher. His original name is Rolihlahla. He had very high hopes for himself when he was growing up. All the things that went on in the "courts" made him make the decisions that he made about his future education. He went to the University College of Fort Hare, where he attempted to receive his bachelors degree in art, but finished getting in at Johannesburg because he was apart of a demonstration and therefore was suspended from campus. While attending Johannesburg, he became very interested in politics and decided that law school was definitely something for him. Both Mandela and his friend Oliver Tambo received their law degrees and the proceeded to open the " first black legal firm in the country (anc, 6)". In addition, he joined the African National Congress in which he became an important spokesman and organizer. Mandela worked within the laws of South Africa for the rights of the blacks.              Mandela spent almost three decades of his life in jail. When he was released on February 11th, 1990, he devoted a lot of his time to catching up on past times that he has missed while being in jail.
