Everyone in life faces problems that they cannot deal with along with not being able to face the reality of life. In the book, The Glass Menagerie, by Tennessee Williams Amanda refuses to accept the reality of her life and her life is full of challenges. Amanda refuses to accept Tom as the man that he is because she is not happy with herself. Amanda believes it is all Tom's fault that Mr. Jim O'Conner has a fiancé and broke Laura's heart because her husband broke her heart and she needs someone to blame it on. Finally, Amanda cannot believe that Tom has finally left the family forever just like his father did.
             Amanda cannot accept the fact that Tom has a job at the warehouse. She thinks it is a horrible job for a man to have. She believes he can do so much better than that and she can't accept that nothing is going to change. What makes it so difficult is that she can't support the family on the job that she has. Her job working at a department store is barely enough to support herself, let alone her son and daughter. She is so unhappy with her job she just wishes Tom would not be satisfied with his so he can strive for the best. Laura lost her only opportunity to get a job as a business woman because she dropped out of college. Not only is Amanda upset with Laura, but she is upset with herself for letting Laura do what she did. Amanda will never be satisfied with anything involving her son until he becomes less selfish. She is taking out her frustration of herself on her children and trying to correct her mistakes through her children.
