The Legalization of Marijuana

             The legalization of the drug Marijuana is and always has been a very controversial topic. While some people are strict conservatives on the issue and believe that all the laws we have restricting it are good laws, there are other opinions. Some people don't like the fact that it makes you unmotivated and makes you eat more and that a lot of minors are using it. But they support the elimination of this drug's restrictions because they believe people should have the right to choose whether or not to subject their bodies to it. Other people just don't care about the effects, and want it legal so they can smoke it and get high without getting in trouble. How should we as a society decide what is the moral solution to this problem we are facing? The drug is a lot less harmful than most drugs that are on the street today. Legalizing it could help the government and society regulate its use more efficiently by offering it in the drug store, thereby putting a lot of two-bit dealers out of business. What is the right thing to do?
             Marijuana was legal until about 60 years ago. People found out about its negative effects that include lack of motivation, increased hunger, potential cancer from the smoke, and sometimes even depression. Although it is more of a psychological than physiological addiction, its negative effects are still present. A lot of people say that Marijuana use is immoral because the drug itself is illegal, and by using it you put yourself and your family at risk of potential harm. While this may be true, Marijuana use should fall within an individual's sphere of liberty. A person should be able to choose whether or not it is a good idea for them. A person should be allowed to make a conscious choice whether or not to put their body and families at risk by using the drug. It would make people weigh the pros and cons of using the drug more.
