Acknowledge Leukemia is a cancer that starts in the organs that makes blood, specifically the bone marrow and the lymph system. Acute leukemias and chronic leukemias are the two broad types. Acute leukemias are rapid while chronic leukemias are slower. The cells that make up the blood are made in the bone marrow and the lymph system. The cells found in blood are red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets.
             Leukemia is when the body produces too many white blood cells. By having too many white blood cells that means that the cells may not mature correctly. They also lack the ability to kill foreign bodies in the bloodstream. This defect can damage the immune system and the body loses its ability to fight off infections. Also if too many white blood cells are formed they take up so much room there is no room for the red blood cells so therefore the body does not get enough oxygen.
             Some symptoms of leukemia include: weakness or chronic fatigue, fever of unknown origin, unexplained weight loss, headaches, skin rash, easy bruising, fullness in stomach, and frequent bacterial or viral infections. It is very easy to get small illnesses such as colds and fevers with leukemia. The white blood cells can not fight infections well enough to fight off even the smallest infections.
             Leukemia is not in the top diseases today but it is considered one of the worst. 30.800 people a year get leukemia in America. It is not a high number but it has affected enough people that it is not heard of and looked out for.
             There are two things that need to be done to put a leukemia patient into remission. The first is chemotherapy and radiation. What they do is they kill the cancer cells. There are side effects of these which include hair loss and nausea. That is why many leukemia patients have no hair. The other thing that needs to be done is a bone marrow transplant.
