The 'Tibet of South America', Bolivia is the highest of all South America's countries. But its landlocked position and mountain ranges also make it a country to find a flavour of what much of South America must once have been like.
             The region around La Paz is known as Little Bolivia where snowy mountains rise above 3,000-year-old pre-Inca ruins at Tihuanaco.
             On the border with Peru, Lake Titicaca is 3,810 metres above sea level and the highest navigable lake in the world. Take a boat trip on the lake to view the peaks of the surrounding mountains reflected in the clear blue waters. On the shore of the lake, Copacabana is dominated by its famous Moorish cathedral, which houses a celebrated wooden statue of the Virgen de Copacabana. You'll also find colonial houses in the towns of Sucre, a World Heritage Site, and Potosí , once a rich silver-mining town.
             In the high plateau around La Paz, the climate is cool, the valleys are milder and the tropical Amazon plains are extremely hot.
             La Paz is a stunning city and a great place to stay; Lake Titicaca is serene and beautiful; and no trip to the mountains would be complete without a trip to the warm valleys below.
             Yellow fever certificates are compulsory when arriving from an infected area. Recommended immunisations are hepatitis A, malaria, polio, tetanus, typhoid, yellow fever. Malaria risks exist all year in most areas below 2,500 m, except urban.
