To Kill A Mockingbird

             I woke up from my sleep to hear the creaking of the gate on the side of the house. At first I thought it was the wind as I noticed I fell asleep while reading the paper. Then I heard the sound again. Someone is invading my back yard! I thought as I ran to the window to see who it was. To my surprise all I heard were the whisperings of the two little Finch children whom I've been leaving little gifts in the knot hole of our tree and the little boy who they played with one day as they came into my front yard.
             "I wonder what they're doing out there at this time of night," I was thinking out loud as Nathan came in to see why I was looking out the window.
             "Who are you talking about??"
             "Uh, nothing Nathan, I just thought I heard a sound, but it was nothing. Really."
             "No, don't look out there!" I said as I pushed him away from the window, but it was no use, he had already seen the children on our property and was enraged.
             "How dare they invade our privacy! Well, I'm going to teach them a lesson!"
             I watched in horror as he grabbed his shotgun and walked out the front door. I felt helpless because I knew there was no stopping him. All I could do was sit and watch. Please leave! Go home! You can get hurt! was all I could think of to say to them but it was already too late. They saw Nathan and the too smaller ones ran toward the back gate. Jem Finch was so scared he stood there like a statue, frozen with fear. Then he ran off the porch and followed the other two. I watched while he helped the other kids under the wired school fence and struggled himself trying to get free. He ran off in his undershorts never looking back for a second.
             As Nathan went to the front of the house to explain the gunshot and his anger to the crowd that had suddenly gathered, I went out back to retrieve Jem Finch's pants. They were terribly crumpled and had a r...
