Literature has portrayed many different lifetimes and societies and the American period is no exception. J. Hector St. John de Crévecour says it best when he says, "He is arrived on a new continent; a modern society offers itself to his contemplation, different from what he had hitherto seen." Much like the new character Crévecour portrays 'coming into' the Americas, the new style of writing follows directly on the heels of this man. Man has evolved from past literature and their attitudes were modeled from past roots such as the Puritans. He, as Crévecour called him, now knows more than he did then, he realizes what is necessary and proper. Out with the religious, overbearing lifestyle and into the new nationalistic and honorable persona.
             Due to events and people in history like the Enlightenment and Thomas Jefferson, religion is taking is last bows and saying farewell to society. The people, under deistic influence, see no reason for religion to govern their lives. That is something they want to do for themselves. De Crévecour begins to discuss America's strong turn toward a non religious society when he writes in Letters to an "American Farmer" , "...if secaries are not settles close together, if they are mixed with other denominations, their zeal will cool for want of fuel, and will be extinguished in a little time...for the strict modes of Christianity as practiced in Europe are lost also." (p. 298) Franklin addresses his son regarding his own lack of participation in religion, almost attempting to justify it. "I seldom attended any Public Worship..." Franklin says before that "These [services to God] I esteem'd the Essentials of every Religion, and being to be found in all the Religions we had in our country I respected them all, tho' with different degrees of Respect as I found them..."
