Researchers found that participants in shock incarcerated programs generally had a more pro-social attitude than did the traditionally incarcerated prisoners. Researchers therefore considered that this change in attitude could have been a reflection of perceived rehabilitation. Researchers than hypothesized that Oklahoma's boot camp participants will believe that the experience resulted in their rehabilitation. To test this, the researchers began looking at the goals that the participants expected out of the camp, the level of discipline of the camp, how much the participants felt that the experience was necessary for them and whether or not they would choose the program over prison (if given the choice in the near future). When testing the success of each one of these sanctions, recidivism was examined. During a two and one-half year period the results were that some of the offenders were recidivated, few received new sentences and a very small percentage of the offenders violated probation and didn't receive a new sentence. After race was examined and considered as a factor on recidivism it turned out that non-whites were more likely to recidivate than whites (this fact is consistent with past studies).
