The narrator shares her torment with the reader and asks him three times at the beginning of the narration: " What is one to do?" or "what can one do?"(3). The structure of these interrogations forecast the duality, which will happen inside the narrator's mind, the pronoun one does not refer directly to the narrator but to someone exterior of the situation (as if she was differentiating her self into parts). The curt, chopped sentences, the brevity of the paragraphs, which often consist of only one or two sentences, convey the taut, distraught mental state of the narrator. The style creates a controlled tension: everything is assumed and understated. The metaphors and the continued reference to immovable object increase the impression of confinement, the "hedges and walls and gates that lock" seem to enclose the colonial mansion and hereditary estate.
