The water-frame and spinning mule were too large and expensive for people to have in their homes so wealthy merchants setup machines in places called factories. The last of these types of improvements was the cotton gin. The cotton gin pulled the seeds out of the cotton, which made it much faster for the producer. Where before the seeds had to be picked by hand, slaves used the machines to significantly increase production. This machine played a large role in the Industrial Revolution. All these inventions and improvements were known as the textile industry. Next came the Iron Industry. Abraham Darby succeeded in using coke to smelt iron. Heating coal in an airtight oven made Coke.
