I have chosen to compare 'The First Time' by Evelyn Waugh from the book 'Decline and Fall', and 'To School through the Fields' by Alice Taylor.
             After reading the first short story called 'The First Time', I've found that Evelyn Waugh describes a teacher and his first day at a new school. The teacher who is called Paul Grimes is a new teacher at the school and has to teach a class who are bad mannered. At the end the teacher over comes his fear of being bullied by his pupils.
             After reading 'To School through the fields' I noticed the first few words, straight away I knew that it was about a pupils point of view about school. Briefly I knew that this story was going to be about a pupil's first day at school, he was nervous and scared about what the teachers may do. During this essay I will be looking at these two pieces and discussing the different ways the writers tell us about the situation.
             The main character in 'The First Time' is a teacher named Paul Grimes; this character is new to the situation and doesn't really know what to do. In the beginning Mr Grimes meets the headmaster and is taken thought about what he has to do, and teach the new class. At this moment in time the teacher is un-responsible and acts like a child as he doesn't know what to teach them, it seems like he has been thrown into the situation, and he is panicking over what to do: "But what am I to teach them?"
             This shows that the headmaster doesn't care about the pupils and just wants them to keep quite.
             The main character in the 'To School through the fields' is a pupil; however we're not given his name. This could represent pupils on their first day at and how they felt about the teacher's an other pupils on their first day. The pupil describes the school as an old stone building and the wind whipping chill in the winter. ...
