This is an interview with a retired firefighter whose name is Tom T. Tom was also a really close friend of my mother's. Firefighting has many dangers as well as many joys. During this interview I hope to get to the point of those dangers and joys.
To begin my interview, I asked Tom to tell me a little about his childhood, and about his life now, as a retired firefighter. He replied by saying,
I was born August 23rd, 1948 on a little farm in Conway, Arkansas. Since I also had six other siblings, four brothers and two sisters, my mother was a housewife. She took care of her children while my father was earning our living as a firefighter. My father had been one of the volunteer fighters for our small town for eleven years before he passed away with cancer. I was just twelve years old when he passed away. Our mother had always told us that, "my children are not going to become firefighters when they are old enough to get work." I think she said this because she thought that the cancer that my father had was cause from inhaling too much smoke while serving as a firefighter. My brothers and sister were all older than I. All of them decided not to become firefighters. As of myself, I knew that I definitely wanted to become a firefighter like my father. And as of my life today, I am married to a wonderful woman, Mary, and have
three handsome boys. Out of the three children, only one decided to become a firefighter. I have five grandchildren, who love to spend time with their "pappy." Since retiring, I have a lot more time to spend with my family.
I then asked him what had encouraged him to become a firefighter. His response was,
