ent at the time of the elections. The 1960 presidential election was one of the closest elections in America's history with Kennedy winning by a mere margin (Encarta). The most memorable piece of his inauguration is a quote from his opening speech, "And so, my fellow Americans, ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country (Spencer, 19). Kennedy seemed picture perfect in many Americans eyes. He settled into a presidency with his nation sitting comfortably on a stable economy, a growing middle class, and seamless world hegemony. However, behind the adorned curtains, lay a presidency shook with scandal and ignominy.
             Behind Kennedy's charming personality and his popularity with America's youth, Kennedy was involved with such degenerates as the Mafia and had created numerous enemies, all with the motivations and grounds to plot and carry through with an assassination attempt. Within six months of his inauguration, Kennedy was claimed to of stolen votes from Republican Richard Nixon. In Kennedy's case, Mafia boss Sam Giancana was accused of arranging and placing ten thousand votes into Kennedy's account. Because of this and other speculations, approximately 51 electoral votes that should have gone to Nixon were given to Kennedy, resulting in Kennedy winning the political race by one electoral vote. There is no revealing evidence that Nixon was behind or even involved with the assassination of Kennedy, but his frequent friendships and ties with Mafia bosses and hit men, and also his frequent non-political visits to Cuba have arisen as suspicious. However, aside from Nixon, Kennedy did all but repay his mafia companions for their efforts in his victory as president. Kennedy set up a Justice Strike Force aimed at the extermination of organized crime (Oglesby, 3/3/04). Needless to say, this angered the whole of the Mafia underground.
