Romeo and Juliet

             Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare is a romantic tragedy about a family feud that causes the death of two young people caused. Shakespeare's character, Juliet, transforms from an innocent child to a rebellious teenager. As J.A. Bryant Jr. states, "Shakespeare's real miracle...was Juliet, transformed from an adolescent arrogantly eager to outdo her elders to an appealing child-woman, barely fourteen, who learns to mix courage with her innocence..."
             Juliet begins the play as an innocent child, obeying her parents every command. When her parents ask her if she will marry Paris, a man she does not know, she replies with, "I'll look to like,if looking liking move, but no more deep will I endart mine eye/ than your consent give strength to make it fly" (A.I, S.3, L. 97-99). It seems as though at this point in the play, she could not imagine ever rebelling against her parents wishes.
             Juliet's first transformation occurs when she meets Romeo. She immediately falls in love with him and adopts his quality of acting without thinking. The first night she meets Romeo she says to him, "My love as deep; the more I give to thee, the more I have, for both are infinite" (A.II, S.2, L. 134-135). She doesn't obey her parents who warn her not to have anything to do with the Capulets, and she never tells her parents that she is going to the Friar's cell to be married to Romeo. She is doing what she wants to do and fulfilling her dreams when she and Romeo are wed the day after they first meet.
             Juliet has to be brave and courageous all too soon when she learns that Romeo has been exiled. She rebels against her parents arranged marriage, "I will not marry yet; and when I do, I swear it shall be Romeo whom you know I hate, rather than Paris" (A.III, S.5, L. 122-124).
