             World events after 1939 drew the United States into greater international involvement. These events forced the United States to abandon its isolationist foreign policy in favor of more active global involvement. The need for military security and the protection of democratic ideals have shaped American foreign policy since 1939.
             The need for military security has shaped the American foreign policy since 1939. Franklin D. Roosevelt believed the attack on pearl harbor justified the United States to officially declare war because the United States needed to fight for their defense and make sure that this form of treachery shall never endanger the United States again (Document #1). This need for military security has shaped the Unites States because the US is now depending on defending themselves whenever needed. Another example of the need for military security is when the Truman Doctrine was established. President Truman believed that the United States should help Greece and Turkey in their fight against communist takeover because if they turn communist there will be a domino effect and all the surrounding countries will also turn communist (Document #5). This made the need for military security to help other countries out so that they wouldn't turn communist.
             The protection of democratic ideals have also shaped American foreign policy since 1939. Roosevelt, Stalin, and Churchill made little sucess at the Yalta Conference. The Yalta Conference was held to plan the division of Germany after the war into spheres of influence. The group decided to hold a UN Conference to establish the division. It shows the three leaders piecing the country together like a puzzle into many spheres of influences(Document#2).
