In 1848 there was a revolution, which has been called a result without a cause; more properly, it might be called a result out of proportion to its cause. In 1848, Louis Napoleon was elected the first President of the Second Republic. In 1852, he became the Emperor Napoleon III. In 1870, the Franco-Prussian War erupted; France lost some part of it to the Germans. Following the defeat Napoleon III was exiled and France established Third Republic.
