In Arthur Miller's The Crucible, neighbors accuse each other of witchcraft during the Salem witch trials of 1692. They disguise their human failings and secular concerns with religious concerns and supernatural manifestations. Arthur Miller reveals the Salem witch trials to stem from greed, envy, and the lust for power. One reason why the Salem witch trials were caused, was because of greed. "There is none but Putnam with the coin to buy so great a piece. This man is killing his neighbor for their land(92)." Thomas Putnam's reason's for putting Jacob's in jail for witchcraft was strictly for benefit rather than putting him in jail him in jail for super natural manifestations or religious concerns. Thomas prepped his daughter to cry Jacob's name so he can take his land strictly out of greed. "...For twenty week he preach nothin but golden candlesticks until he had them... I tell you true when I look to heaven and see my money glaring at his elbows it hurt my prayer, sir, it hurt my prayer(63)." Mr. Parris is also a good example of the greed in Salem. He looked to be the reverend just to have power and money. He used his status to accuse people of witch craft when all he cared for really was being able to keep his power and money, even when he knew most of what he said were lies.
             Envy was another problem that was a main part of the Salem witch trials. "...And stuck two inches in the flesh of her belly he draw out a needle...
