The night he spends with her in the darkness imprints a moment in time that lingers deep in his memory for the rest of his life, affecting him indefinitely. This lasting moment in the cell includes Truus' mysterious presence, womanly affection, and the emotional crutch she provides for Anton after the trauma of the assault. For example, he has a predilection for the puzzling aspects of his life, from the simplicity of unsolved crossword puzzles to the intricate workings of mysterious sextants. Encountering Truus in the "more than dark" prison creates the sense of puzzlement that Anton carries with him throughout life (2).
