He was much older and tried to seduce Tess in ways that were very foreign to her. One night when Alec was escorting Tess back to her home he brings her into the middle of the woods with the intent to rape her. At this time Tess was unaware of what was going on because she was asleep. Hardy states, "...till her breath warmed his face, and in a moment his cheek was in contact with hers. She was sleeping soundly, and upon her eyelashes lingered tears."(Pg.71). The reader must feel sympathy for Tess because we, the reader, know what is happening.
