It helps to understand the causes of burnout if we know what exactly causes burnout. "In its basic form, burnout is emotional exhaustion" (). Burnout is job related and not caused by problems at home. Employees who are experiencing burnout are usually enthusiastic, young and idealistic. An employee who does the same thing over the years is not suffering from burnout, but tedium. Burnout results from an "idealistic commitment that runs head on into the realities of a particular position" ().
Too often, organizations and employers find out to late what happens when good
employee's burnout. Unfortunately, most of these same employers not only don't
understand how to combat burnout but they don't even know how to recognize what
causes burnout or how to recognize the signs.
Most employee burnout starts from a few basic reasons. Employee's motivation suddenly drops off from to many weekends at work, no enough vacations, trying to do too much, severe stress, fatigue and even failing to take care of themselves physically and mentally. "Organizations can be stressful, demanding working environments simply by the very nature of their industry. Internal systems and constraints can create pressures." (Dwan, 2000).
Everyone is expected to do more with less these days and the stress of that kind of challenge will eventually overwhelm even the strongest employees. When deadlines are close, emails are piling up in our inbox and we are in a frenzy to make the next meeting on time, we not only will become stressed but eventually that pressure will make its way into out job performance.
