of mice and men

             By looking at the characters in Of Mice and Men you can see that each character is different from the others in many ways. From the way they look, to their mannerisms, and their different thoughts and dreams they are all very unique characters. When reading Of Mice and Men, many of the character's stuck out in my mind, and one of those was Curley's wife. When first mentioned in the book, I wrote her off as an automatic antagonist of the story, but as the story continued I learned much more about her that made me change my mind.
             Curley's wife entered the story described looking as beautiful as ever. She had her make-up done perfectly, hair curled, and was wearing a lovely cotton dress. She comes into the bunk house looking for Curley and asks George and Lennie in a flirtatious way. George seems to notice her intent and tries to pay no attention to her whatsoever. After she leaves, George explains to Lennie that's she's just trouble and for him never to talk to her. After reading this story though, you might notice that Curley's wife is the only female character in the novel, and she is never given a name, and only is referred in reference to her husband. She represents in the book, the temptation of female sexuality in an all-male world, and also is the indirect cause of the tragic end to the novel. Rather than a villain as how you might see her from the beginning of the book, Steinbeck depicts her as a victim-like all the other ranch hands. After reading the book more, you can tell she isn't really trying to be a tramp, but she is just a poor lonely girl.
             When she's in the barn with Lennie you find out how lonely she really is. She spills her heart to him telling him how she could have been in movies if her mom would have let her.
