His "I Cannot Be Silent,"" a cry against capital punishment, was published and the newspaper editor was arrested for printing it, and Tolstoy's secretary was arrested and deported. He left his home in 1910 in order to escape deeply rooted marital problems that had culminated in disagreements over his will, his copyrights, and his diaries, and died the same year (10).
