Banking vs. problem-posing

             Banking and problem-posing, what are they? What do they mean? They are both styles of learning so why is there two distinct descriptive words? Simple, a man by the name of Paulo Freire used these two words to describe educational practices. Banking, as he stated, was essentially garbage disposal with no brain functions, while problem-posing forced the brain to function as it was meant to be. Teacher's today still use both practices. Some just put slides or notes in front of students and force them to copy without retaining knowledge which would be used later on in life. Others such as my senior year Robotics teacher let us teach ourselves in an orderly manner and made learning a great experience.
             Banking, as it is referred to, is simply dumping information into the students brain without any explanation or interaction with the teacher. The students take the notes or listen to the lectures then memorize the material just long enough to pass the test. This does not promote long term learning for the simple reason that the information is never learned and stored it is just simply lost. Pupils memorize the words but never fully understand the meaning behind them and the reasons for there existence. The banking concept as stated by Freire dulls the learning process making it less interesting to the students thus causing their minds to wander in class. He opposed this method gravely in his teachings.
             Freire not only criticized banking but he proposed a solution, problem-posing. With problem-posing the teacher presents the class with the material and the class is then open for discussion. This opens up the floor to any unforeseen problems and questions. The students interact within the class room environment which is still controlled by the teacher but it is very enjoyable and thought provoking.
