Visiting a waterfall, especially on a sweltering hot day, can be an enjoyable way to spend a day. I get in my car, drive a few miles out of town to Amnicon State Park, then get out and walk the cleared paths to the falls.
The trails are well worn from the many visitors. Any vegetation that would have grown has been trampled down, and all that is left are the narrow paths trimmed with trees and long grasses. I follow the trails to the edge of the river, being cautious not to disturb any wildlife that might be in the vicinity.
I carefully cross the river using the slippery stones, which stick out of the surface of the water. I can hear the rush of the water long before I can see the falls. As I sit on a large, moss-covered rock, I start to examine the beauty of the scene. The multi-colored wild flowers are in bloom and the trees are a full, lustrous green. I can hear the squirrels chattering in those trees, and the birds singing their sweet "tweet-tweet."
I decide to get up and move closer to get a view of the spectacular waterfall. As I gaze at it, I can feel the coolness and the power of the water as it rushes over the rocks and into the pool ten feet below. Closing my eyes, I listen to the sound of the waterfall and take it all in. I drift off into my own world, oblivious to everything except for the sound of rushing water.
The sun begins to set, and the sky turns into a pinkish-orange color. It is a stunning sight. Slowly I rise, knowing I should start heading back to my car. I take one last look at the natural splendor in its evening beauty, producing a mental image to cherish forever.
