             Having a popularly elected President would result in the following democratic benefits in Britain-
             Fairness and equality, that is, everybody that is an adult British citizen should have the opportunity to vote for and stand for election to the office of Head of State. This would make the Head of State more representative in both senses of the word.
             Increased Openness meaning the election and day-to-day work of the president would be open to public and parliamentary scrutiny. Action could be taken to prevent and reprimand unacceptable behaviour. The president would be openly able to express political views, making him or her equal to all other citizens. This would prevent members of the royal family expressing their views on political matters despite constant protest that the royal family is politically neutral.
             Accountability where the behaviour or actions of the president were deemed to unacceptable or illegal then the head of state would be prosecuted and replaced through popular elections.
             I would argue that having the monarchy has a negative effect on this country and hinders certain aspects of social development. My reasoning for proposing that Britain should become a republic do not just revolve around the practical, tangible effects of the monarchy. Often what is more important is what the monar
