The Theme of "The Necklace"
             The theme of "The Necklace" by Guy de Maupassant is it doesn't take much to destroy or save lives. When Mathilde lost her friend's necklace, it ruined the lives of her and her husband. They had to borrow money with outrageous interest rates, move into cheap apartment, and worked very hard. Mathilde had to let the maid go and do all the housework herself. She even dressed in cheap clothes. After ten years, they had paid back every penny, but all of the hard work had taken a toll on Mathilde. She looked very old and was living just the opposite of what she had dreamed of. If she had been honest with her friend when she lost the necklace, she would not be living the way she is now. She probably realizes that the life she had before wasn't so bad after all.
